Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets

Cleveland Cavaliers at New Jersey Nets (+11, 192.5)

The Cleveland Cavaliers are on roll. They hold the top spot in the Eastern Conference with a 26-8 record. LeBron and company have won six straight games and 11 of their last 12 overall. They have defeated the Hawks not once but twice, managed to hold the Suns under 100 points and handled the defending champion Lakers easily in a 102-87 Christmas Day victory.

The New Jersey Nets are the complete opposite. These cellar dwellers of the East are the worst team in the Association with an embarrassing 3-29 overall record. In their three wins (Charlotte, Chicago and New York), they combined to average 101 points per game while allowing 96.

Cleveland, a team who takes great pride in lockdown defense, sits fourth-best in the NBA while limiting opponents to only 93 ppg. The Nets are worst in the NBA, struggling to score above 90 points per outing.

In the second game of back-to-back wins versus the Hawks, Cleveland held the Eastern Conference’s highest scoring team scoreless for a span of 8:49 in the fourth quarter.

''It wasn't pretty,'' said Cavs head man Mike Brown. ''During that particular stretch, we were pretty physical and we were physical without fouling.''

Pick: Cavaliers

Dallas Mavericks at Sacramento Kings (N/A)

The Kings have lost three of their last four games and their schedule only continues to get tougher. Rookie standout Tyreke Evans has missed the past three games with a sprained right ankle and is expected to miss the rest of the week.

The Kings go as their rookie point guard goes. This was made clear when Evans willed his Kings from a 79-44 deficit with eight minutes left in the third quarter in Chicago on Dec. 21. Evans scored nine of his 11 fourth-quarter points in the final 2:13 while finishing with a team-high 23 points (18 in the second half) and eight rebounds in the 102-98 victory.

With help from his strong performance in Chicago, Evans was named the Western Conference Rookie of the Month in December. In his 28 games played in purple thus far, he has averaged 20.3 points, 4.9 assists and 5.1 rebounds. He has been compared to the likes of LeBron James and Derrick Rose. His unique combination of size, skill and speed makes him more than difficult to defend.

"I'm in a pretty good position right now. But I want to win, and I want us to get in the playoffs,” Evans said. “I want each team that plays us to know they're going to be in a game every night."

The Sacramento Queens won’t be in this game on this night without their prince of a point guard.

Pick: Mavericks

Ice picks 1/2

Atlanta Thrashers at New York Islanders (-145, 6)

Two teams outside of the playoff picture looking in will try to inch a few points closer to the eighth seed on Saturday.

The visiting Thrashers have dropped six in a row and 11 of their last 15. They will be in a back-to-back situation and have compiled a 4-2 record in that scenario this season.

New York has been brutal in the month of December (4-8-3), but it looks as if the team has finally decided on a No. 1 goaltender.

Dwayne Roloson is 14-7-5 this season and holds a 2.75 goals-against average. In the Islanders 2-1 shootout win over Columbus on Tuesday, Roloson stopped 41 shots in 65 minutes of play.

"We're finally getting everything we need to do at home," Roloson said after the game. "For us the simpler we keep our game, the better we are."

Isles captain Doug Weight returned to the lineup on Thursday after being out since Nov. 6 with a shoulder injury. The veteran played almost 16 minutes and went 2-4 on face-offs with one shot on goal.

"We're fighting to stay alive right now. I'll bring whatever experience I have on the ice and the bench," Weight said.

New York has taken the last three games in this series while the over has cashed in six of the last nine.

Pick: Islanders

Detroit Red Wings at Phoenix Coyotes (-140, 5)

Much like the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Stanley Cup runners-up are simply fighting to get into the postseason right now.

The Red Wings have been decimated by injuries this season with integral players on the team like Henrik Zetterberg, Johan Franzen and Jonathan Ericsson missing time.

"We've got to continue to battle and get points and move up in the standings," said captain Nicklas Lidstrom. "That's the way we're looking at it. We have a lot of guys out and we can't feel sorry for ourselves."

Detroit is three points removed from the last two playoff spots, occupied by Vancouver and Los Angeles who have 49 points. The Wings have been shutout in their last two road games and have dropped three straight away from home.

Meanwhile, Phoenix has played in three straight shootouts and is 6-2-2 in their last 10 outings. The Coyotes had a 10-game home win streak snapped by San Jose on Thursday. Head coach Dave Tippett was not happy with his team’s performance against the Sharks after going 0-for-6 on power-play opportunities.

"We were fortunate to get out of the game with a point," Tippett said. "We had a good burst of energy early, had shots but not a lot of quality. Then they started competing at a level where we didn't get to."

These two teams have split games this season, but Detroit has won eight of the last 10 meetings in the series.

Pick: Red Wings

They are 9-4 their last 13 picks

Big Dog Winner ...

600♦ NORTHERN ILLINOIS HUSKIES - Honestly, I don't understand the line at all. The only thing I make of it is that South Florida hails from the Big East, and the Huskies are coming out of the Mid-American Conference.

But in this game, that doesn't matter one bit.

The Huskies are hungry, and those who remain from last season's run to the postseason, which ended with a loss in the Independence Bowl, 17-10 to Louisiana Tech, it's a game they want to win outright, not just play well in.

I actually wouldn't be surprised if Northern Illinois were able to win this game.

I know South Florida appears to have a sound defense all around, but this is also a Bulls team that lost five of its last seven football games after it lost third-year starting QB Matt Grothe to a season-ending injury in Week 3.

And before you tell me one of those wins came against West Virginia, I'll remind you that has quietly become a nice little budding rivalry in the Big East. And, for whatever reason, the Mountaineers have lost three of five games overall against USF. Just tells me the Bulls got up for that game.

But why couldn't they against Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Miami or U Conn? I know those are powerhouse programs, but they weren't even competitive Their offense were non-existent. Their 90th-ranked passing game was exposed. Their masked 31st-ranked defense was decimated.

And now they catch an NIU team that has taken their lumps during an up-and-down season, in which they've all grown up. It'd be hard for you to show me any kind of intensity from South Florida, that Northern Illinois has demonstrated down the stretch, even in very tough losses to Ohio and Central Michigan.

Well-rested, the Huskies are healed up from the grind-it-out campaign the MAC teams play, and I believe with this one being early - the first game of the day - the Huskies will be the team ready and raring to go.

The Huskies posted 30.8 points and 354.1 total yards per game, including a staggering 202.4 rushing ypg. ON the flipside, the defense yielded a mere 21.2 points and 323.6 yards per contest (119 rushing ypg). I expect their best effort in what will be a much closer game than the oddsmakers think!

2 Star Selection
**South Carolina (-4.0) 32 Connecticut 21 (at Papajohns.com Bowl)
11:00 AM Pacific, 02-Jan-10

I'll take South Carolina in a 2-Star Best Bet at -5 points or less (they'd be a Strong Opinion from -5 1/2 or -6 points) and I would lean with the over at 51 points or less.

Strong Opinion
Mississippi (-3.0) 29 Oklahoma St. 21 (at Cotton Bowl)
11:00 AM Pacific, 02-Jan-10

I'll consider Mississippi a Strong Opinion at -3 points or less (a lean at more than -3) and I have no opinion on the total.

Northern Ill 20 S. Florida (-7.0) 24 (at International Bowl)
09:00 AM Pacific, 02-Jan-10

I'll lean with Northern Illinois at +6 points or more and I'll lean under 47 points or higher.

Arkansas (-7.5) 35 East Carolina 26 (at Liberty Bowl)
02:30 PM Pacific, 02-Jan-10

I have no opinion on the side at -7 1/2 or more, but I'd lean with Arkansas if the line goes down to -7 points. I will lean with the Under at 63 points or higher.

Texas Tech (-7.5) 33 Michigan St. 26 (at Alamo Bowl)
06:00 PM Pacific, 02-Jan-10

After making all the necessary adjustments my math model favors Texas Tech by 9 points with a total of 58 1/2 points, but Michigan State applies to a solid 53-21-3 ATS Bowl situation that plays on bowl underdogs that under-performed during the regular season. I have no opinion on the side or the total in this game.

36-16 Run (+26.15 Units)

Saturdays Plays

3*** Chicago Blackhawks (-160) over St. Louis Blues
This will mark the second of six meetings between these two teams and the Hawks are the dominant team. The Hawks have had a great first half of hockey and pretty much injury free. Kane is still on fire leading the team with 45 points and has 7 G, 4 A during his six-game point streak. Cristobal Huet has a 1.01 GAA in his last four starts against the Blues and Chicago has scored at least four goals in each of the past four games, while St. Louis has allowed at least four goals in each of its past four games. A very big offensive night will be in store for Chicago coming up tonight.

Take CHICAGO

2** Calgary Flames (-180) over Toronto Maple Leafs

This will be the second time for these two teams to meet this season. Calgary won 5-2 at Toronto and we will likely see the same type of game tonight. Calgary has shown a very organized shutdown kind of defense that is stopping teams left and right. The Leafs continue to struggle offensively and the Flames are healthy in every aspect, which makes for a good showing for the offense of Calgary. Look for a continued dominance for the Flames and Bourque of the Flames to bust out more points
Take CALGARY

2** Colorado Avalanche (+100) over Columbus Blue Jackets
This will be the third of four meetings for these two teams. The Avalanche have won both previous matchups by decisive marks. The Avalanche are playing great hockey, while the Blue Jackets have been struggling tremendously winning only one game in the past 12. The Jackets D have been horrendous and are slowly falling apart. Colorado is 12-8-4 on the road this season, while Columbus is 9-6-5 at Nationwide Arena. This should make for an interesting game tonight especially as main scorers such as Rick Nash and Jakub Voracek are not scoring for the Jackets.
Take COLORADO

2** Pittsburgh Penguins (-145) over Tampa Bay Lightning
This is the second meeting between these teams and Pittsburgh had a commanding defeat in the first matchup. This will be an interesting game as the Pens have not been playing as they should be. I feel that tonight will be the night when Pittsburgh comes out of their funk and opens up some offense. Tampa Bay is missing four key players and are feeling that weight on their shoulders. Big night in store for the Pens.
Take PITTSBURGH

1* Anaheim Ducks (-125) over Nashville Predators
This will mark the second meeting between these two teams as Anaheim won the first in 4-0. I am not going off of that win as to why I am choosing the Ducks. I am going off of their leading scorer Martin Erat being out for the next 7-10 days, Kevin Klein day-to-day, Jerred Smithson (broken hand), Jordin Tootoo (broken foot), and Colin Wilson (groin). They are without many key players and the Ducks have won the last three meetings with the Predators dating back to last season. A great matchup between these two teams and will be very interesting to watch.
Take ANAHEIM
